1. I am unable to log in. The system does not recognize my User ID and/or password.

These are the most common login problems:

  • Mistyping the User ID or Password
    • Be sure that your Caps Lock is not on.
    • Your Password is case-sensitive, so be sure you are entering it using the proper case.
    • If you are cutting and pasting the information, it is easy to accidentally include extra characters such as spaces. Try typing the information.
    • Watch for common problem areas such as the distinction between the following:
      • The upper or lower case letter W (w, W) and the upper or lower case letter V (v, V)
      • The number  zero (0) and the upper or lower case letter O (o, 0)
      • The number one (1) and the upper or lower case letter I (i, I)
  • Entering an outdated or incorrect User ID or Password. When you change your primary e-mail address your User ID does not change automatically (you can change it to anything you wish by clicking on your name at the top right of any page, after login).
    • The system will not send your Password via e-mail, so you may have to enter your primary e-mail address in the Password Help field on the Login page. After clicking the Go button, you will receive an e-mail that provides a temporary one-use Password and instructions on how to create a new secret Password.
    • As noted in the Password Help e-mail you receive, the temporary Password has a 72-hour expiration. After that period you will have to use the Password Help field again to request a new temporary Password.
    • You should receive the Password Help e-mail soon after requesting it. Sometimes your e-mail server may be running slowly and it will take a while. Check your Spam or Junk folder to see if it is in there. Requesting the Password Help e-mail more than once will reset the temporary Password each time, so you will have to use the most current Password Help e-mail's temporary Password to continue.

2. I want to create a new password.

  1. Click on your name at the top right corner of the screen and select "User ID & Password" from the dropdown menu.
  2. Click on the "Change Password" link and change the password.

Your Password

  • Will be case-sensitive
  • Must be at least 8 characters in length
  • Must contain only alpha-numeric characters
  • Must contain at least 2 letters and at least 2 numbers
  • Cannot contain leading or trailing blanks (spaces)

3. I have forgotten my Password and/or my User ID.

Reset your Password: Enter your primary e-mail address in the Password Help field on the Login page. After clicking the Go button, you will receive an e-mail that provides a temporary one-use Password and instructions on how to create a new secret Password.

  • As noted in the Password Help e-mail you receive, the temporary Password has a 72-hour expiration. If the expiration date has passed you will have to use the Password Help field again to request a new temporary Password.
  • You should receive the Password Help e-mail soon after requesting it. Sometimes your e-mail server may be running slow and it will take a while. Check your Spam or Junk folder to see if it is in there. Requesting the Password Help e-mail more than once will reset the temporary Password each time, so you will have to use the most current Password Help e-mail's temporary Password to continue.

4. I have requested my Password from Password Help and have not received a reply.

Not receiving your Password Help e-mail at all could be due to several issues:

  • The system does not recognize the e-mail address you entered. If you have used other e-mail addresses you can try entering them in the Password Help field. If you no longer have access to or cannot remember the e-mail address you are using for your account, please contact the ACS Publications Help Desk at support@services.acs.org to resolve this issue for you.
  • Your e-mail server is directing that incoming e-mail into a Spam folder, either in your e-mail or at the institution level. We have worked hard to prevent this but in some cases it does occur. In this case your IT department will need to resolve the issue.
  • You have more than one account or your account is "hidden" and the system cannot locate your account. Please contact the ACS Publications Help Desk at support@services.acs.org to resolve this issue for you.

5. While trying to create an account for myself I received an error message that my e-mail address already exists in the system. Why haven't I been informed about this previous use of my e-mail address and what can I do now to create my account?

Some users have been provided with accounts by the journal office or they had accounts in the former Paragon System that were transferred to ACS Paragon Plus.

You can obtain your User ID and a temporary password by entering your e-mail address of record in the Password Help field on the Login page and clicking Go. The resulting e-mail will walk you through the process of setting your permanent password.

If you do not receive the Password Help e-mail, please check any Spam or Junk folders you may have. If you cannot find the email at all, please contact the ACS Publications Help Desk at support@services.acs.org to resolve this issue for you.

6. I am receiving a "Badly Formatted E-Mail Address" error.

First examine the e-mail address carefully for text errors. Make sure there is an "at" symbol ( @ ) and that the correct letters are in upper or lower case.

Entering text such as "None" or "NA" in the "Secondary E-mail Address" fields when creating or revising your user account can also cause this error. Remove the text from the field and leave it blank if a secondary e-mail address is not wanted.
