How do I make an article open access?

ACS makes available open access paths for authors for newly accepted manuscripts as well as previously published articles.

  • For newly accepted manuscripts, the corresponding author receives a letter upon acceptance providing instructions and a link to an order in Copyright Clearance Center’s RightsLink service* (ACS has contracted with CCC’s RightsLink service to handle payment of author publishing charges). This eCommerce system accepts payments made by credit card and by purchase order. Articles are not made open access until payment is made and processed.  RightsLink allows authors to receive discounts by entering their membership number, the name of their affiliated institution (for All-Publications subscribing institutions), and the promotional code for ACS Author Rewards in a “discount” screen.
  • For previously published articles publishing after January 1, 2009, authors may use the convenient ACS AuthorChoice app available in the ACS ChemWorx environment.  In this app, authors enter the DOI of an article they are interested in purchasing, triggering a request for an order link.  Authors follow the order link through Copyright Clearance Center’s RightsLink service.
  • For all other articles, to request to change a specific license type selected on an open access article, for bulk purchases, or for further assistance, authors should reach out to support@services.acs.org.

*Authors acknowledging funding by Austrian Science Fund, FWF, will receive a letter but will not receive an ecommerce link. The FWF has made special arrangements with the ACS for covering costs of authors funded by FWF when those authors elect ACS AuthorChoice via CC-BY.  Instructions for authors to follow are provided in the letter sent at manuscript acceptance.
